Broich House in the early 1900's

The House's History

The original Georgian House stands in the grounds of an old monastic sanctuary said to be linked to Inchmahome Priory on the island Inchmahome in the nearby Lake of Menteith. Originally called Broich House, the Victorians changed it's name to Arngomery before it reverted to its original name in 1990. The giant yew tree on the left hand side of this photograph was planted by the Augustinian Canons that lived here nearly 800 years ago. The tree is listed in John Lowe's book "The Yew Trees of Great Britain and Ireland" published in 1897. The book's notes about the tree state; "Old buildings, taken down lately near site, were of eleventh century."

Sir James Hutchison, the third baronet of Rossie, is the current owner of Broich House and it has been occupied by his family for over 100 years. Sir James' maternal great-grandfather, Archibald Colville, ran David Colville & Sons, the largest steel works in Scotland. His wife Jean was said to be the first person to host "Cocktail Parties" in Scotland and during the 1920's Fortnum & Mason were commissioned to entertain the guests in style. The Fortnum & Mason carriage would be sent on the overnight train from London to Scotland. On its arrival at Stirling Station the horse drawn carriage would be dispatched to Broich House for the evening's glamorous entertainment.
